About YMAI Jamaica
A national community for students interested in developing AI and helping society understand it.
Our purpose
YMAI is pronounced “why-my”.
AI is becoming part of everyday life. Students should have the knowledge to understand it, the skills to build with it, and a voice in how it is used.
YMAI brings those interests together. Our focus is technical curiosity alongside public understanding: learning how systems work, being honest about their limitations, and asking who benefits from them.
As a country chapter of YMAI International, YMAI Jamaica will connect local schools and universities while sharing ideas and resources with the wider network.
What guides us
Open curiosity
Beginners and experienced students learn together. Questions are welcome.
Responsible practice
Test claims, respect privacy, credit others, and consider the people affected.
Student leadership
Students shape the work, with appropriate school and adult support.
Matthew Williams
Founder
Matthew is a Jamaican student at Campion College and a two-time medallist at the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI). He represented Jamaica in Beijing in 2025, earning silver, and in Astana in 2026, earning bronze.
His experience learning and competing alongside students from other countries helped shape the idea for YMAI: a lasting network where students can share knowledge and help others find their way into AI.
YMAI is independent. Matthew’s participation in IOAI does not imply an affiliation or endorsement.
Where we are now
YMAI is in its founding stage. Matthew is currently its founder and organiser. Programme teams, additional leaders, school associations, and international chapters are being recruited.
YMAI is not yet legally registered and does not currently claim charitable or tax-exempt status. Our founding charter sets out a proposed structure for responsible growth.
